Orchid flower care – how to make your orchids thrive
If you want to keep flourishing orchids in your home, you should ideally devote some time to research. Make sure that you know exactly which species that you are keeping and then proceed to learn a bit about their native homes around the globe. One of the key aspects of successful orchid flower care is to mimic the natural environment of each orchid species as accurately as possible. Sometimes this is not feasible inside an ordinary home – proper Phalaenopsis orchid care would for instance involve mimicking the conditions in the Himalayas for certain species – but you can at least try to get as close as possible. You might not be able to bring the temperature down to Himalayan winter conditions, but you can at least decrease it a bit each night to make the orchid feel more at home. For certain species it can also be a good idea to move them to a cold basement or even outdoor shed during their resting period to make the orchid understand that the winter season has really arrived. This is naturally only recommended for orchid species that actually experience winter seasons in the wild. Lowland tropical orchid species would most certainly die if you left them in an unheated garden shed during the winter. Some orchid species doesn’t even need a strict resting period after flowering, just give them some time to recuperate and they will be ready for a new blooming season in no time.
