Cichlids and their care

CichlidsThe family Cichlidae is a huge family with numerous tropical fish species spread over a significant part of the world. You can find cichlids in Asia and Africa, and from the southern parts of the United States all the way down to the southern tip of South America. You have probably already heard names such as Jack Dempsey, Discus, Oscar and Angelfish. Cichlids are very popular in the aquarium trade but before you take them home you should research the species to find out its requirements. In order to provide your fish with ideal cichlids care, you need to learn a bit about its native environment, e.g. water temperature and pH-value. Some cichlids are highly adaptable and can live in both alkaline and acidic water, while others are extremely finicky and need an advanced aquarist that will keep the pH-value within a very specific range at all times. The same is true when it comes to levels of soluble waste. Some cichlid species can tolerate quite a lot of organic waste products in the water while others will get sick or even die even at moderate levels. If you are a beginner aquarist, ideally pick a cichlid that is sturdy, adaptable and peaceful. Also make sure that it will not outgrow your aquarium or destroy your plants. Doing some research in advance can save you a lot of time, trouble and money in the long run.
